Synopsis

Bent on stealing Henri Faust’s soul, Lucifer’s envoy Mephisto approaches the distinguished aging professor. Mephisto gives Faust a taste of youth, glory and wealth then snatches it all away. The love of a young gypsy woman will save Henri’s soul as an angry crowd closes in on Mephisto, deprived of his Master’s protection.

French film director and screenwriter René Clair(1898–1981)was an avant–garde filmmaker known for satiric and surrealist touches in his works. A former journalist and actor, Clair discovered a passion for filmmaking and directed 28 films between 1928 and 1965 that were the results of his wit, style, charm, and creative use of the tools of cinematic art.
