This animation film adapted from LEE Gyeong Seok"s Webtoon original, is the ultimate hybrid of a typical martial arts revenge saga, nostalgia for the 1980"s, and cliches from super-hero movies, using a rather complicated format. Seung Ryong, dreaming of one day becoming the master guitarist, visits Mr. MA Tae Pung, a guitar instructor once hailed as the legend among heavy metal guitarists. The youngster shudders with vengeance as he finds what happened to his teacher who had miserably failed in his competition with the then head of the Sageori Guitar Studio and had become a lost soul. Successfully enduring training from hell and now armed with the Shaolin guitar technique 18, Seung Ryong reinvents himself as a mysterious super hero Bongdariman, challenging his nemesis Mappagi. This film focuses on retro sentimentality, parodies, and the so-called "restroom" humor, concocted in golden proportion, to fully re-create the energy of the original. Palpable are dynamic visuals enhanced by typical animation imagination, and cheap sentiments of kitsch culture. (JANG Byung Won)
