Program Note
In the 1980s, Hong Kong was emerging as a global economic powerhouse, leading to an influx of Chinese immigrants and a period of social and economic chaos. The most dangerous and mysterious lawless area was Kowloon Walled City. During this time, CHAN Lok-kwun, struggling to survive in Hong Kong, finds himself pursued by a gang led by the notorious Mr. Big and seeks refuge in Kowloon Walled City. With the help of Cyclone, who rules the Walled City, Lok-kwun adapts to life there. However, threats against Lok-kwun and the Walled City intensify.
Kowloon Walled City, demolished in 1993 and now a part of history, serves as the backdrop for this powerful tale of survival and brotherhood. The film captures the spirit of Hong Kong through its setting and the intertwined lives and relationships of its characters, evoking the essence of 1980s Hong Kong. The dazzling action sequences, reminiscent of the golden era of 90s Hong Kong cinema, add to the film's allure. Officially invited to the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the film received critical acclaim upon its world premiere. (Martin LEE)
