Life and Death of Porno Gang

Mladen DJORDJEVIC

Serbia2009 106 min 35mm C World Premiere

Synopsis

A Serbian artist named Marco aspires to be a filmmaker. His dream appears to be hard to accomplish under the rapidly changing socio-political circumstances of the country. After working in documentary film, he ventures into the porn industry. His ambition of revolutionizing Serbian pornography with socio-political porn-horror fares, however, fails to impress producers. Perhaps, Marco is too far ahead of his time. Frustrated, he assembles his colleagues and puts a live porn show on stage, to which Serbian law enforcement takes vindictive actions. (They beat the heck out of Marco and his gang.) Still, the artists launch a nation-wide tour to sexually enlighten the country, amid the Eastern European political landscape taking a complicated turn. Life and Death of Porno Gang throws away almost all taboos, such as group sex, murder, and full exposure of genitalia, only that they come with a socio-political context. As you see the enthusiastic youngsters dreaming of art and revolution being murdered, raped, and kidnapped one by one, you get to wonder if you’re witnessing one of the biggest turning points, or cinematic landmarks, of the Serbian film history.
