Synopsis

A huge man on a sofa wakes up from a shallow sleep and starts to work on a crossword puzzle. This opening of the film suggests that the main character Bellamy has an inquisitive nature. He is "an inspector on holiday". However, rather than spend a leisurely time in the southern city of Nimes, he seems to be instinctively more drawn to solving mysteries. Rather slow-paced for a thriller, this film focuses more on the relationships of the people around Bellamy rather than simply following a case. In other words, even the relationship between Bellamy and his beautiful wife and the less than amiable relationship between Bellamy and his drunk half-sister are important in the movie. In the end, the veteran Nouvelle Vague director Claude CHABROL has made a subtle yet dense movie about an extended notion of mystery: life. (HONG Sung Nam)
