CHOI Won Seop’s My Burning Heart is like an extension of the much-quoted line “How is it possible your love has changed?” from the movie One Fine Spring Day. I say this because My Burning Heart explores the essence of love through ups and downs, heartaches and make-ups of Byeong Ryeol and Bo Ram. Given that, the title is a kind of double (or in this case, multi-) entendre: His ‘burning’ desire for her; their ‘burning’ love affair; their memories ‘burning’ out after a few arguments, leaving their hearts ‘burning’ with rage and pain; though their passion for each other still ‘burning.’ Director’s rather comical perspective of looking at the couple, and their ‘rambunctious,’ tumultuous love, reflects deep affection and compassion for anyone in quest of love. Yes, love for someone can change. But it can keep on burning because it starts as a material to be sculpted into the shape of a heart, given the time, and overcoming countless fights and reconciliations. The time factor, as well as the human dynamics, is significant in My Burning Heart, due to which the director pays sufficient attention to the time before and after the couple’s love affair, as well as to the people around them. If you have ever been in love, you’ll have no problem finding yourself in the shoes of the two lovers. (HUH Nam Wung)
