Synopsis
Director Rob SCHMIDT joins Masters of Horror for the first time in Season 2, revealing the cruelty of human mind with nauseatingly disgusting visuals. Cliff takes a drive with his wife Abby late at night. At a moment of carelessness, he slams his car onto a tree lying across the road. Thanks to the air bag he survives the accident without any injury, however, Abby, who was thrown out of the car, was burned all over the body and plunged into a coma. Cliff agrees to take Abby off life support to alleviate her pain, but, there is a secret behind his decision. Since then, he begins to fight with his mother-in-law in the court, Abby's spirit begins to threaten him. Judging from the brilliant gore scenes that SCHMIDT helmed in Wrong Turn>, I expected that his next film would be a similar one, but surprisingly it wasn't. In short, Right to Die is a mystery horror film that centers around the grudge and revenge from the secrets a among husband, wife and a car accident. It is also unique that Rob mixed the movie with the elements of psycho horror genre. To add more power to the storyline too commonplace or even trite, SCHMIDTS utilizes the severe burn of Abby which led her skin to peel off all over the body as much as possible, which results in probably the most disgusting and intense gore scenes comparable to the ones in Dario ARGENTO's Pelts. In addition, it may be interesting to track the influence of Clive Barker's Hellraiser in Right to Die. Abby completely off skin because of the burn reminds me of Hellraiser and the setup that they had to peel off other's skin for skin transplant is similar in many aspects except for the switch between man and woman. Right to Die climaxes as Cliff makes a desperate decision on the brink. It is exciting to see that he must kill to live on at the cost of driving himself into a dilemma deeper and deeper. Be sure not to miss the scene where they peel off skin in a surgery to feel the suspense of most realistic yet disgusting gore film out of the 13 episodes. (KIM Jong Chul)
