Program Note

Baek Seung-kee is a strange director who starts his films with a familiar setting and progresses with frequently unexpected developments and his peculiar brazen humor, and then succeeds to persuade his world, self-entitled “C level”. He is back. Jango: Uncharged begins with chained slaves and a slaver riding a horse (with sound effects) with the title, “Somewhere in Texas”. As the title suggests, it starts as a Western. Even though it might feel more like “Somewhere in Incheon”, assuming you don’t read the subtitles, strangely you can understand this film made in English, which is not surprising.
However, what the film expresses within the endless parodies from Charlie Chaplin to Quentin Tarantino, with imaginative name spoofing, and laughter with a straight face is the true value of film, which will last, as will the comfort of both filmmakers and viewers. In an era where people claim “movies are over”, it has returned armed with the most traditional B-movie sentiment, unlike any other time. This is the reason why BIFAN arrange the meeting again with the director and audience, following last year. (MO Eun-young)
