Program Note

Many filmmakers fascinated by “the king of horror”, Stephen King, have brought his novels to the big screen. From Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me (1986), and Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption (1994), over 80 films have been born of King’s works. Under the influence of King, these films shed light on the unique power of his stories through the medium of cinema. King on Screen, directed by actress Daphné Baiwir, who began acting at the age of five and learned about life from film sets and colleagues, pays homage to these films, adapted from King’s novels. In the opening sequence, which pays tribute to the films based on King’s novels, including The Shining, Daphné appears herself, showcasing her acting skills. Subsequently, alongside clips of actors from numerous films, figures such as Mike Flanagan, Mick Garris, Frank Darabont, Vincento Natali, and Kevin Kölsch, commemorate and celebrate Stephen King’s world, brought to life on the screen in front of Daphné’s camera.
