Program Note
“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” the subtitle, a similar theme song, and a lame Star Destroyer. It’s a “sequel” to a scene that became Hiroshi’s everything after June 1978, when he tried unsuccessfully to topple Jaws with the 8mm movie CLAWS, and now he’s trying to make a movie like Star Wars. He managed to find a heroine, but the synopsis had only one line: “A spaceship is coming.” Can Hiroshi seize his last summer with a sci-fi blockbuster? As you can see from the title of the film, which refers to a specific film camera that is linked to his cinematic identity, Single 8 is an autobiographical film about Konaka Kazuya, the godfather of “Heisei Ultraman” series, who led the way in Japanese science fiction. However, the director focuses not on the extraordinary ones who are loved by the industry for their genius, but on “the ordinary ones”, who don’t even know the basics of screenwriting, giving us “tearfully nostalgic memories, even though we have never experienced before”.
