The Comeback

Patrik EKLUND

Sweden2020 103min World Premiere

Program Note

Former Badminton champion Annbritt’s life has fallen flat since she suffered a biased judgment in court. She often wakes up in the morning drunk on the street, and even her social worker is sick of her temper. Her neighbors, who can’t bear her idiosyncratic behavior, finally try to get her thrown out of her apartment. She can’t fall any lower and the only way out is to make a comeback, playing to recover her champion status, which she lost when falsely accused 35 years earlier.

Consisting of 10 ten-minutes’ episodes, The Comeback is a film version of the popular TV series. Despite comic exaggeration with foul language and images of burning faeces, Annbritt’s pitiful routine is the anxiety and frustration of life that could end in loss and tedium, a reality everyone can sympathize with. These ridiculous characters, who struggle for the comeback match, seem to show the long-standing truth that people can find happiness in effort itself and not just the final victory. (Jin PARK)
