Program Note

A magician named Lukman makes a little boy vanish from his magic box during his farewell performance, but the show turns tragic when the boy never reappears. The boy’s mom then goes into the magic box to find her son, but she also goes missing. Nobody knows where they went or how to bring them back, even the magician, and Lukman is pursued by the police. What happened to the magic box and how can the missing people be brought back?

Director Faozan Rizal experiments with narratives through visual images in the style of silent movies and presents a fairy tale magic story in Abracadabra. This film also develops the narratives through the editing of images and sound instead of linear narratives. The fairytale-like production design is reminiscent of Jacques Tati’s films and the images are enjoyable. It was one in the line-up of the NAFF It Project 2015. (Ellen Y. D. KIM)
