Synopsis

'Shoot the Sun by Lyric' is a vivid documentary film directed by CHO Jae-Hong, who filmed a year-lasted struggle of people in Korean film industry, to defend the screen quota system (Korean films must be played for 146 days in a year).Director Cho explains his directing intention; "this struggle is not just to keep the screen quota system, but to keep our independence from the cultural imperialism of the U.S. represented by Hollywood."In this film, we can see the hunger strike held in Myong-dong church, the protest note submittal to the U.S. Embassy, support from film makers in other countries, marching actors/actresses holding portraits of themselves in the disguise of their own death, and their tonsures (including tonsure of IM Kwon-Taek, a senior director who will remain as a director forever.) We cannot help crying on the scene of these shave-headed Korean film makers hooking one another's shoulders, singing together 'Morning Dew', a song of YANG Hee-Eun.From this scene, we can realize how powerful a song can be, and it wouldn't be necessary to quote these words; "people became partisans not for the ideology but for the doleful melody of the partisan songs"(from , a book written by PARK Kyong-Ree), "when we feehe power of words is not strong enough to tell the truth, we rely on songs" (words of a leader of Myong-dong church demonstration a few years ago.One day, two suns rose and lasted forever. Our hero shoots the sun with lyrics, while a hero in another country shoots it with the arrows, Heros in this myth are today's "cultural heroes" who protects our own sun. These heros are the people who are still confronting the long-lasting struggle. (PARK Sung-Kyung)
