Synopsis

Jin-seok returns home from war and marries Sun-ok. They have a son, but the son inherits Sun-ok’s stuttering problem and is sent to a special school. Meanwhile Jin-seok falls for Chu-wol and begins abusing his wife.

Program Note

Woman of Water is a reminder of director Kim Ki-young’s ‘woman series’. Familiar motifs include a working woman and an incompetent man, with a physically impaired woman symbolized by illness or disability repeatedly used. Woman of Water may not have received rave reviews at the time of release, but the highlight is the last scene, still regarded as Kim’s signature moment. (MO Eun-young)

Diretor

KIM Ki-young

After graduating from Seoul National University, he became a refugee in Busan in the Korean War. There, he worked as head scenario writer and producer at the film production company of the United States Information Service. This allowed him to become a director in 1955 with The Box of Death, the first synchronous recording film in Korea. He was a rare stylist who showed strong characteristics as a writer from the beginning.
