Full Employment

Thomas OBERLIES / Matthias VOGEL

Germany2008 20 min Digibeta C

Synopsis

If art is something meant to testify about the world that has created it, the modes of such testimonies had better be diverse. Full Employment is a good example of that, wherein desperate struggles of those desiring full-time work are portrayed with one-of-a-kind imagination. Like in the scene where the young man named Miro, who works at a public organization helping the less fortunate members of the community (the elderly and the handicapped) find a job, shows a 78-year-old Yansen a prospective job, the film appears to be dealing with an everyday documentary or one of those TV reality shows. But the work that the seemingly fragile old man is looking for comes with a job title "a zombie hunter." After that point on, the film suddenly shifts its attitude toward a gory, body-parts-flying horror fest. The hilarious yet chilling sense of humor portrays the universal humanity and the hardship amid the current global recession. (JANG Byung Won)
