Program Note
Operation Undead is based on the zombie virus 'Fumetsu' caused by the Japanese military's biochemical experiment after World War II, and depicts the process of surviving soldiers confronting monsters. A considerable high level of gore and action heightens the genre's tension, while also reflecting on colonial and militaristic violence in a historical context. The existence of soldiers who became monsters while retaining their emotions and memories symbolizes how war undermines humanity and otherizes its victims and the movie asks the meaning of protecting humanity even in desperate and violent situations while centering human stories over monsters. Amid the recent trend of Thai horror films transitioning from folk horror to social metaphors, the film drew attention by attempting to expand the genre through the combination of gore and historical narratives.
