Macabre

The MO Brothers

Singapore / Indonesia2009 93 min HD C World Premiere

Synopsis

There is this omnibus movie Face of Terror produced by Brian YUZNA in Indonesia. The film consists of six short segments completed by seven young directors, each of which is intriguing, indicative of the country’s current film industry full of new talent. One of the segments was directed by the MO Brothers (no relations). And the piece earned recognition from the Singaporean producer/director Eric KHOO, subsequently turned into the feature film Macabre. The whole process tells us how active the cinematic collaboration of the region is, how talented the two new directors are. Macabre doesn’t offer a wildly original story as compared with the conventional horror flicks. All the usual gadgets are there: innocent travelers; a deserted house; a monstrous family living there murdering people. The reason it is still intriguing is that it offers the creativity and genre-specific catharsis found only in well-made classic horror films. The hostess of the house, the central figure behind all the carnage, provokes anxiety just by being; the life-or-death situation in which the main characters find themselves is at once familiar and unfamiliar. Even the homicidal maniacs establish their raison d’être within the solid plot. This unexpected delight, this really well-made film, is what fascinates and entertains the audience. (KWON Yong Min)
