Program Note
In the year 2265 AD, the Galaxy Turnpike, a space highway connecting a space colony orbiting between Jupiter and Saturn to Earth, has seen its heyday come and go. Now in decline, the shabby hamburger joint “Sando Sando Burger” at a shuttle stop on this highway is managed by Noa, who is full of worries. He has received orders to return to Earth, and it’s clear that his beloved wife Noe is involved with another man. On the day Noa decides to return to Earth, a variety of aliens, each with their own stories, visit Sando Sando Burger.
Despite the unfamiliar setting and fresh genre, director Mitani Koki’s comedy remains unchanged. True to his style, diverse characters with unique stories collide in one space, creating various scenarios and comedic situations even within the sci-fi genre. Stories about people’s lives, whether on Earth or in space, are always similar, and the resulting laughter is universal. Outstanding performances by top Japanese actors like Katori Shingo, Ayase Haruka, and Oguri Shun add to the charm of this cosmic comedy. (Martin LEE)
