Program Note

A donkey sets out in search of food but gets captured by humans. They skin it alive and stuff its belly with candy instead of entrails, then send it off to a child's birthday party. Meanwhile, a lonely boy, who struggles to fit in with his friends, is invited to the party and stands before the donkey-shaped piñata, holding a bat. The contrast between the hollow eyes of the people and the donkey's eyes highlights the story's nature as a brutal fairy tale. (Kristin JI)
