Program Note
Two chimney sweeps have a conversation after work. One guy says he recently had sex with another man. The man is heterosexual, married and has children, but he says the sex was good and he didn't feel any conflict. Another man, who cannot understand his colleague's sudden story, dreams every night that he has become a woman. What does sudden sexual irregularity mean to these two men? Sex, the first film in a trilogy planned by Dag Johan Haugerud, does not show any sexual images, contrary to the expectations the title might suggest. Instead, it tells the story of endless conversations between characters about sexual relationships and behaviors such as gender identities, homosexuality and extramarital affairs. Without asserting any great political mind or emphasizing the dogmatic attitude of political correctness, the film attempts to fully consider the various possibilities surrounding sex within ordinary life. Sex is just one of the various problems in life, or a problem for everyone that cannot be separated from all of them. (Jin PARK)
