Program Note

While waiting for a train to attend their mother's wedding, brothers Gautam and Raman are mistaken for thieves who have stolen a newborn baby from the platform. Although the misunderstanding is quickly resolved, the brothers become entangled in the case because Raman witnessed the actual kidnapper. Gautam, eager to leave, is frustrated by his brother's desire to help the baby's mother. However, the police detain them, and the desperate mother pleads for their assistance in finding her child. Reluctantly drawn into the ordeal, the brothers face a nightmarish reality.
Based on a true story, this film meticulously explores several of India's pressing social issues within a short runtime, such as frequent child abductions, missing children, and the dangers of mob violence fueled by prejudice and ignorance. The film's genre-driven intensity and assured direction, especially for a debut, deliver a compelling narrative filled with impactful messages. The question remains: was the baby the only thing stolen? (Martin LEE)
