Synopsis
What if Director Jang Kun Jae of A Midsummer’s Fantasia (2015) made a horror movie? Jang Kun Jae directed this six-part drama Monstrous, co-written by Director Yeon Sang Ho of Hellbound (2022) and Train to Busan (2016) and Writer Ryu Yong Jae of Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area (2022). Monstrous is a supernatural thriller, dealing with hell as a cursed Buddha statue emerges in the world and the entire village falls under a curse. In return for displaying the cursed Buddha statue that shouldn’t be revealed to the world, those who see the statue face the fear that they have hidden in their hearts, and harm people around them. Watching violent scenes, such as killing a neighbor with a sickle or hitting a person on the head with a hammer, we wonder if this is really one of director Jang’s films, but detailed descriptions of the family history, melodrama, and resentful relationships in the scenes guarantee that this is one of his.
