Strange Hommage

To Catch a Virgin Ghost

SHIN Jungwon

Korea2004109min

Synopsis

Yang-i and a group of gangs arrive at Sisil village to catch a traitor, Seok-tae, and thus begins the battle with villagers denying seeing Seok-tae. It is a major work of hybrid genre, a variation of the popular ‘Gangster comedy’. Genealogy-free humor such as a satellite image popping up during phone calls is rampant, and the unique mantis of Im Chang-jung with his two swords is famous. Actors An Nae-sang, Woo Hyeon, Park Hyeok-gwon, and Kim Yoon-suk, who were just rookies back then are nice to see, and the scene where Woo Hyeon and Im Chang-jung check each other’s age in a valley is also a famous scene anyone can recall. After this fanatic debut, director Shin Jungwon produced 4 movies including: Chaw (2009), Ghost Sweepers (2012), and Night of the Undead (2019). He passed away last year at a young age, which is a pity since he was more than capable of building his own ‘universe’. (JU Sungchul)
