Synopsis
In a peaceful Lithuanian village, police chief, Gintas, looks forward to a quiet life before retirement. However, a murder case soon leads to serial murders. Thinking it would be his final investigation, Gintas leads the inquiry and learns that the serial killer’s targets are the local political elites, of which he is one. He falls apart gradually, fearing being targeted while clashing with a young investigator, Simonas. The Generation of Evil is by Emilis Velyvis, who is famous for his Zero series, popular in Lithuania. The film shrewdly criticizes modern Lithuanian political history, which is stained with power, conspiracy, secrecy, and betrayal in this thriller plot set in the late 20th century, when they left the soviet block. It also presents a trend in European genre films that reinterprets recent modern history as a genre narrative. (Jin PARK)
