Synopsis

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is based on a best-selling Australian thriller written by Joan Lindsay. It is a story about the sudden disappearance of a group of schoolgirls and their teacher during a picnic at Hanging Rock. Three girls go on a trek to the lower slopes of the rock. As time passes, the girls never return. A long search is conducted by the police, and one by one they find the missing girls. After being asked a series of questions, none of the girls remember what exactly happened to them. The film contains many suspenseful moments and a mysterious plot that will keep the viewer guessing. PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is director Peter Weir's second feature film.

Peter weir was born in Sydney, Australia in 1944. He first made underground films and worked in theater as an actor, director, and writer. He has been working as a filmmaker since 1967, and made his first teature film named HOMESDALE in 1970. In 1973 Peter Weir directed his second feature THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS which received international acclaim at Cannes Film Festival in 1974. PICNICAT HANGING ROCK is his third feature, and the most successful Australian film. The LAST WAVE is forth feature.
