Synopsis

This epic film is set in a general hospital in Copenhagen. The KINGDOM is a mystery consisting of several stories. One is about a psychic woman named Mrs. Drusse who finds a Little girl named Mary hiding in a elebvator, and discovers later that she is a wandering spirit. Thought a series of attempts, Mrs. Drusse leans that Mary was killed by her father.
Another story concerns the head of staff Dr. Moesgaard trying to conceal a medical mistake during a surgery on a little girl named Mona who later becomes a vegetable. A Swedish neurosurgeon named Helmer is the antagonist who put Mona in her frozen state. Only these two know what really happened to the little girl, and they try to cover up the unfortunate incident. A junior registrar named Hook is looking for evidence that will incriminate Helmer, whom he hates with a passion. There are more sub-plots such as a pathologist recruiting organ donors, and Judith, Hook’s wife, who is pregnant with another man’s  baby, and has her fetus growing at an abnormal rate. Unlike ordinary soap operas, THE KINGDOM offers a more complex and entertaining narrative with eerie overtones and subtle suprises.

Born in Denmark in 1956, he began making short films when he was 13. after graduating from the Danish Film School, he has directed many commercials, music videos, and TV programs, including the critically acclaimed THE KINGDOM. Some of his best works include ZENTROPA and BREAKING THE WAVES, which won top awards at the Canner Film Festival.
