Synopsis
DEATH AND THE CAMPASS is based on a story by Jorge-Luis Borges, a famous Latin American writer. Eric Lonnrot is a famous detective who seeks revenge on the infamous Red Scarlach, a terrifying professional thief, who killed one of Eric’s old friend during a bloody hold-up. Nevertheless, Scarlach feels the same way about Eric, who was involved in his brother’s death during a gunfight. During several years they both set traps for each other, hoping his opponent will fall for it, Finally, Red Scharlach develops a devious scheme that will draw Detective Lonrot to his fatal doom. Using a compass, Lonrot discovers. That three crimes scenes are linked to the same culprit, and he has a hunch on where the next crime will be. The whole story of Lonrot and the Red Scharlach is told by his old chief, superintendent Franz Trevianus through flashbacks.
DEATH AND THE COMPASS illustrates a sinister world of cops and robbers where normal laws have decayed and the innocent fall as easy preys to relentless criminals. Unlike the formulaic narratives of old-affer case, Director Alex Cox transcends the detective genre with his satirical plot and subversive themes.
