Synopsis
Juraj Herz who has conquered various fantastic film festivals for the past 30 years with his surrealistic films challenges the profound issue of “the limitation of Freedom” in his recent film, PASSAGE, A middle aged banker Foman seeks refuge in a passage. When he encounters rain in a series of unfortunate situations in which his car breaks down during heavy traffic. Strange things happen to Foman who wanders deeper into the passage after a red headed girl who beckons him to follow. A flower girl who turns wild one night stands into corpses, the man in the boiler room and his nude young lover, the death of an old friend who believed his wife was Forman’s lover, people who seem to enjoy the taste of mice and so on.
PASSAGE not only presents a series of discontinuous events but also depicts a claustrophobic world caught between fantasy and reality. As the sexual exaggerations and nudity hints, probably the most important point in this film is that unlimited freedom exists within the passage.
