Synopsis

A married woman has a unique social position in Korea. Commonly called 'Ajumma', she has the fate of the 'prosthetics' who lives her life for others. The married woman is allotted her place in the society as being someone's wife or someone's mum, with little recognition given for her individual identity. Although the repressed often gets pushed under the dark, sooner or later it demands the time and space to materialize one's yearnings and aspirations. The series of disturbing episodes in recent times involving the large numbers of married women taking up lovers, although they have subsided after a brief period, is the indication that the long history of the male dominance in our society is starting to show the cracks. The submission of the married women have clearly provided the secure foundation for our society to continue with the patriarchy. Their counter-attack, in the form of conducting the extramarital affairs, therefore brought about the serious repercussions. The adequate example would be the scene where the heroin's husband in the film falls into the worst state of lethargy as the wife announces her departure in. An Affair presses the vital points of our society by approaching them indirectly, employing the common theme of adultery and amorous passion. By probing into one of the most inflammable topics in our society and presenting it in the well-polished package, the film enhances the justification of the subject. (LEE Seong-Wook)
