The Exciting Life of a Tree

Bill PLYMPTON

USA1998 7min color

Synopsis

Bill Plympton's movies are notoriously shocking. In I married a Strange Person, the sex scenes are sometimes even more undisguised than so called pornography, the internal organs almost all the time burst out, and bodies are split into pieces. Those who have seen such descriptions of violence would have either been fascinated by his weird and bizarre imagination or felt like puking. His hatred of decency is almost admirable. The four short films of this villain to be on show at PiFan 99 will expose a lot about himself. Compared with the other three, Exciting Life of a Tree is the most decent one. Then what is exciting? What can be exciting when talking about the life of a tree? The answer is the POV. What would the world be like from the perspective of trees? The POV is set in between the top of the tree and the trunk so that we can see both upward and downward. From this delicate perspective this world is a battlefield for survival and desires. Trees fight with insects and wild animals such as a beaver. Men live for their own species' sake. They can't coexist. Finally the ugly human beings try to cut the trees which are actually their own eyes. (HONG Sung-Nam)

Diretor

Bill PLYMPTON

He is maybe the last artist using the old fashioned animation techniques. In the great tradition of Tex Avery and the animation of UPA his works for cinema advertising have a special touch of quality and invention. Around Europe his complete work is been shown with great success.
