Synopsis
A seaman on a wooden leg delivers water to a woman everyday. The woman spends all day waiting for the seaman to sprinkle water on her legs. The seaman grows tired of his routine life, until a flute-playing love rival enters the picture. Bermuda is a love story between the one-legged seaman and the mermaid who lives on a dried-up sea. However, one does not find a typical fantasy associated with mermaids in this film. What we do find are various motives borrowed from fairy tales, presented in an oddly distorted fashion. The idea of the mermaid living in the midst of a desert and falling in love with the beast is one example of such twisted symbolism. Music plays an influential role in this film. The sound of the flute filling the desolate desert, for instance, becomes an effective backdrop to this odd kind of love story. (KIM Eui-Chan)
