At Midnight with Glauber

Ivan CARDOSO

Brazil1997 16min color

Synopsis

A Brazilian director, Glauber Rocha, has founded, and represents, the latest movement in the Brazilian film industry called ?inema novo?which began in the early 1960?. He insists that in order to portray Brazilian society in films accurately, one has to sacrifice the refinement of technique to concentrate on crudeness and despair. Such a notion is also the basis of his innovative definition of aethetics, which states that ?ethetics in Brazil equal starvation? Produced by Rocha and others, At Midnight with Glauber deals with many critical questions on various aspects of films. The audience may find themselves confused and lost with the excessive load of information conveyed by this film. The collage of the scenes depicting the savage ?estival?of blood, taken from countless films ranging from the Brazilian it Hollywood, represent the central concept of cinema novo - the aesthetic concept of cannibalism for revolution. At the same time, the narrator invites us to ponder upon a variety of crucial subjects including the questions of life, death, madness and how they relate to films. Recommended for serious film lovers, this 17 minute film contains enough critical thoughts and ideas to fill a whole book on films. (HONG Sung-Nam)
