Magic Nightmare

Jacques DONJEAN

Belgium1999 7min color

Synopsis

A group of cockroaches crowd into a dilapidated house. Inside, a magician is preparing for his last performance. A storm is coming and we hear the chains rattling. There is a sign of life somewhere in the house but one can not be sure. The cockroaches carry out a massive attack on the house and the magician casts the final spell. One of the merits of short films is the fact that we can obtain enough enjoyment from focusing on the images flashing by. In some sense, this allows short films to be more liberal than full-length features. At first glance, this film may remind you of insect-infested films like Joe? Apartment. However, the only feature shared in the two films is the chaotic presence of cockroaches. Une nuit de cafard, by comparison, is much closer to a fantasy. Stylistic images and sleek camera movements camera running through narrow spaces are impressive features of this film. Every trivial object, it seems, holds the key to the complex universe hidden within. (KIM Eui-Chan)
