Synopsis

1980 in France. A man in his 50's gets charged with assault as he tries to stop his handicapped daughter from being raped. He loses his job as a butcher and moves into his mother-in-law's house with his pregnant wife. He wants to build a new life by opening his own butcher shop but ends up working as a security guard for a hospital. Furious with the unreasonable accusations from his wife, he ruthlessly beats her and leaves home. Carrying a gun, he goes back to Paris in the hope of finding a new life. It proves to be very difficult however, as he fails to find work and his friends are not in the situation to help him. Penniless and jobless, he desperately tries to make ends meet as he lives from one day to another.Seul Contre Tous, the first feature film from Gasper Noe, is filled with the most startling and refined images you'll see in this year's festival. Its unique style comes from the squirming images creating the characteristic movement in otherwise still scenes. Full of bitter monologues, such as 'the law only exists for the wealthy' and 'love is nothing but a selfish act', the film presents the dark portrayal of the wrath and despair felt in the life of a jobless proletariat.
