Synopsis
Martin Luxford (Hugo Speer, The Full Monty) is a twentysomething ex-con on parole looking to start a new life. The fall guy for his older brother? failed bank heist, he is finally sent home with a warning ; stay off the dole or end up back in prison. Having changed his name to ?artin Jean Baptiste Dechamps? he begins to pursue his dreams by forming a swing band. He has been tutored in the art of the saxophone by his cellmate Jack (Clarence Clemens), a New York musician. Martin clings to his hope and determines to spread the word and build his own band. He recruits musicians where he finds them : bassist Buddy, the football star, drummer Oi, an ex-skinhead, and a brass section made up of bar flies. Topping the list is Joan (Lisa Stansfield), the love of Martin? life, now married to Martin? arresting officer. Joan struggles between her secure life and her feelings for Martin. But the long hours of practice finally forge a real band and new feelings between martin and Joan. The band gives a break-through performance but it? not the end to Martin? problems. Faced with prospect of serving the rest of his parole behind bars, Martin can only hope that his friends and family will keep their faith in him. In the spirit of The Full Monty and The Commitments, Swing is a warm, funny, triumphant tale of a band of Liverpool misfits who work together to fight off their bleak future with the spirit and hope of swing music.
