The Clown at Midnight

Jean PELLERIN

Canada1998 91min color

Synopsis

Lorraine, an opera singer, gets brutally murdered by a killer dressed as a clown. Her lover Orsini was fingered as the prime suspect at the time, but the case was never solved. 15 years later, Lorraine? daughter Kate, together with a group of students, finds herself in the same opera house where the murder took place. Since then she experiences eerie flashbacks and nightmares that recreate the murder scene with vivid details. Guided by her drama teacher Gibby, Kate visits her mother? old dressing room and reads the love letter sent by Orsini to her mother. She realizes from the letter that Orsini is her biological father and is confident that he didn? commit the crime. On the next day, Gibby gets murdered by a killer dressed in the clown suit. From then on, the students get slashed off one by one by the same clown. Still not knowing the identity of the killer, Kate finds herself becoming the next target and is horrified when she finds the decapitated body of the clown. It would be hard to find any new ingredients in this film if you are already a devoted fan of teen slasher movies such as Scream. However, the feelings of terror and suspense in the film are appropriately controlled by the comfortable presence of the good old cliches of the B grade horror films. (LEE Jong-Eun)
