Synopsis
Resurrection and immortality are two subjects that are of equal interest in the East and West. In Tomie, immortality is portrayed by a murder victim who just won? stay dead. Police are investigating the killing of a highschool girl named Tomie Kawakami (Miho Kanno) and they learn that within months of her death, four of her classmates have killed themselves and seven, including a teacher, have gone insane. They discover that three years ago another Tomie Kawakami was murdered in the Gifu Prefecture. In fact they find other dead Tomie Kawakamis going back to the beginning of the Meiji Era. Tsukiko is a former classmate of Tomie, suffering from insomnia and amnesia from a car accident. She is plagued by nightmares with visions of herself bathed in blood. Meanwhile, there are strange noises coming from next door to the apartment she shares with her lover Yoichi. Her neighbor is in fact raising what seems to be a baby in a cardboard box. But this ?aby?is not exactly a whole being, well at least not yet. This being soon grows into a full-sized woman with a bad temper. One day she leaves her nurturer lying on the floor and ventures into the world. She begins work as a waitress in Yoichi? restaurant. Her name is Tomie Kawakami. Tomie? first victim is the restaurant manager who is found dead with an umbrella rammed through his throat and out his back. But Tomie? real target is Tsukiko, whom she laments has forgotten her, her old classmate. This film is based on a popular Japanese horror cartoon series by Junji Ito and is the latest from director Oikawa Ataru whose credits include Octopus Army and The Boy Made In Japan. (Zeong Chosin)
