Synopsis
Confession of an Actress a self-reflective movie that tells the story of an old forgotten man who finds a daughter he never knew he had and builds her up to become a star. It was released in the mid sixties when KIM Soo-yong, who produced over 100 movies in his 40 years as a director, was at the busiest time of his life. He knew the production conditions of the period better than anyone and accordingly touched upon them while portraying the glamour and futility of stardom. Local distributors and theater owners who showed up with bundles of bills and interfered with everything including casting, and actors who agreed to appear in more than one movie at a time, causing the cancellation of shoots, were living records of the production environment of the time. Red liquid that looked nothing like blood smeared over the forehead and makeshift dummies thrown off cliffs were typical elements of production in those time. However, the greatest enjoyment you can get out of this movie is that the main characters all use their real names. When NAM Jeong-im, a major actress in the '60s, holds up a big piece of paper with the name NAM Jeong-im on it, trying to come up with a stage name, we cannot help but laugh. The use of real names adds a subtle bitterness to the movie. When the movie was released, KIM Jin-kyu, who played an old has-been actor in the movie, was no longer able to play the lead part of a romantic hero. JEON Gyeh-hyun had to play the part of a woman who loses her man to a younger woman. Even director JEON who plays a veteran of the movie industry hands over the megaphone to a younger KIM Soo-yong who in fact directed this movie and shows the hard cold logic of the world of movies.
