Synopsis
The title < Jakarta > One of the characters in the film says that is a slang for a perfect crime-which is not true. The director who desires to play an intellectual game with his viewers intends this sort of fixing. The vice president who has decided to rob his father's bank orders his gang to rob the bank at its opening hours. However, at the same time a group of robbers disguised as policemen attacks the vice president, kidnapping him. The whole thing becomes complicated and mixed up. What this 'Jakarta' is saying is the relativity of reality. Depending on the character, the same incident is interpreted in a different way. While Quentin Tarantino used this sort of formation to deal with the dull lives of his characters, director ZEONG Chosin is more interested in playing games with the audience. For this, the film referred to many modern thriller films. It is easy to find < Pulp Fiction >'s set-up, < Usual Suspect >'s intellectual intensity, and <Sonatine>'s black humor in the film. Unfortunately, the parodies and references do not make up for a unique film of its own. It is not a crime film dealing with realities of the dark world of crime, but a film of dry intelligent games. Perhaps it is a new method in disintegrating and deciphering the genre that is filmnoir. (LEE Sang-yong)
