Synopsis
Mahadev is a fisherman who leads a hard life with young daughter. One day, he finds a big clam in the ocean When the daughter discovers a pink pearl inside the clam, it brings about unexpected fortune to the family. Soon the news spreads throughout the village and everyone begs to see to see the pearl, and eventually someone tries to steal it. In order to stop all this madness, Mahadev tells his daughter to throw away the pearl into the ocean. But the pearl continues to stay beside them. This film is about an unexpected fortune that brings about sudden changes to a small Indian fishing village. And through out the film, the director criticizes the greediness in the hearts of men. Mahadev tells his daughter that a pearl is something very precious, which can only be found in one out of thousand clams. The daughter asks Mahadev how a pearl is made. And Mahadev tells her "A star that falls from the sky into the ocean goes inside the ocean, and a pearl is made." But we know that each day of our lives filled with hardship, rather than a mystical fable. We may meet unexpected fortune in our travels, but this fortune may turn out to be a disaster. Life is a fateful game filled with hope and despair. And in this game, some can quench their thirst even in the desert, while others can be thirsty even inside the water. < The Magic Pearl > tells us about such truths of life. (KIM Sung-uk)
