Synopsis

Michael Caine stars as Billy 'SHINER's Simpson, a small tome-boxing promoter with big ideas. In a crucial match which could land a chance to fight in the world title fight, Billy puts his only son Eddie 'Golden Boy'Matthew Marsden) against Frank Spedding's (Martin Landau) American champion Michael 'Mikey' Peck(Derrick Harmon). The financial future of Simpson and his daughters? Georgie(Frances Barber) and Ruth(Clare Rushbrook), rest on the outcome of the fight. When Golden Boy performs badly and is defeated, Simpson's world disintegrates. Billy is convinced his son was 'got at', but before he can find out the truth a shot rings out and Eddie falls to the ground and dies. Distraught, Billy begins his frantic search for the killer, aided by minder Mel(Andy Serkis) and Stoney(Frank Harper), But during this chaos, his past is catching up with him and the police are closing in; Billy SHINER Simpson accuses friends, family, and enemies as the killer, but the real killer is not revealed until the shocking and explosive final act.

John Irvin received training from the London School of Film Technique and made his first documentary, Gala Day, in 1962. Throughout the 1960s John traveled extensively making critically acclaimed documentaries for the BBC and 1TV as well for his own company Mithras Films. Throughout the 1970s John directed numerous successful television dramas. Since 1980 John Irvin has directed many feature films. Most recently John has directed The Fourth Angel starring Jeremy Irons and Forest Whitaker.
