Jiang Hu, The Triad Zone

Dante Lam

Hong Kong2000 108min 35mm color

Synopsis

It has been over ten years since Jiang Hu's loyalty fell, 'the wrath of <  A Better Tomorrow  >. Meanwhile Hong Kong was returned to China, and there were no special change in the despondency of the Hong Kong film scene. <  Jiang Hu, The Triad Zone  > throws an empty smile at that age and at that film scene. Jimmy Yam, portrayed by Tony Leung, is the boss of a reckless gang in Hong Kong. There is a premonition of murder, proving this, sniper's bullets follow. He uses this incident as an opportunity to create a conspiracy to eliminate the rival gang. However, < Jiang Hu, The Triad Zone > which starts-off like a typical Hong Kong Noir provide an unexpected storyline. Jimmy gains time to think not about the downfall of the rival gang but of the people around him. Memories of his wife he still loves, a bodyguard, who after taking bullets on his boss's behalf, confessing love, the people who helped him to his current power, all have a story of their own. In < Jiang Hu, The Triad Zone > the secret strife between gangs, murder and violence are familiar of the Hong Kong films, but the people are not the former anti-heroes. Tiger who implores Jimmy to accept him into the gang thrusts a knife at him and a man who went to prison instead of him shows an unchanging loyalty as the principle in life. In the ever-changing world there are those that change and those that don't. Now in the streets of Hong Kong there exists a sense of emptiness as well as warmth. Through this charming film we can experience the variations in genre and self-reflection present in Hong Kong films. (KWON Yong-min)
