Synopsis

The USA, a country comprised of immigrants from the four corners of the globe, is called the 'melting pot'. One of downside, however, is that there is no end to racial conflicts and controversies. This conflict is not only between the whites and the non-whites but between all races. The existence of ostracism within the whites is a widely known 'secret'. The Anglo-Saxons are indisputably the nobility within whites whereas the Irish are the lowest class. focuses on the Irish immigrant community of New York. Director Jimmy Smallhorne, from Dublin, Ireland, has worked in Irish circle theaters in New York since the 90s. As the screenwriter, director and an actor in the movie, is akin to his biography. The main character Johnny, an Irish construction worker at his uncle's construction company, is popular among his colleagues, and has a girlfriend who loves him. One day he suddenly starts having nightmares and realizes that his seemingly stable life, is driven into catastrophe. does not 'directly' deal with Irish immigrants' conflict and problems of identity. Rather, most of the film is centered around Johnny's life of drugs, violence, and homosexuality. But through his life is portrayed the lives of Irish immigrants. Also, the documentary mood created by Declan Quinn, a cinematographer of , plays an important part in conveying these intentions. (LIM Jisoo)
