The Tale of the Rat that Wrote

Billy O¡¯BRIEN

UK, Ireland1999 13min 35mm B&W

Synopsis

The Tale of the Rat that Wrote combines live action with puppet animation, expressing a commotion made by the intelligent rats with an unexpected imagination and unique style. Looking through the eyes of the rats that crawl on the floor, illusion mechanisms like a shadow puppet, and the space structure described desolate and dirty, the world inside the film reminds us of Kafka's ¡¸The Castle¡¹, claustrophobic and melancholy human's world through the eyes of rats filled with meaningless and destructive labor and all kind of intolerance. The dark and lifeless world inside the film transforms into fairytale-like warmth within a moment by the rats that at times run about and at times contemplate. (JOO You-shin)
