The Fall

Aurel Klimt

Czech Republic1999 14min 35mm color

Synopsis

After filming from the air, the camera slowly moves in like a crane-shot to an old East European city showing the streets as seen from a tall roof. When the old man is hanging from the roof, a doctor and a nurse appear but turn back with a heartless expression, and the police who brought a short ladder give up the rescue operation. The old man falls. A detached street cleaner cruelly picks them all up and disappears. The city turns dark and quiet again. A stop-motion animation using dark paper and cloth has no lines and is edited in a slow rhythm with melancholy music in the background. It seems to be not just depicting the reality of The Czech Republic, but as a depressing revelation of the world today where democracy and social justice is regressing. (KIM So-hee)
