Synopsis

A military-engineered virus, released during a plane crash, kills the entire human population. The only survivors are scientists in Antarctica, who desperately try to find a cure and save what is left of the planet from further destruction. Great adaptation of an original novel by Sakyo Komatsu. This was the most expensive Japanese film of the time. Cast includes Glen Ford, Olivia Hussey, and Sonny Chiba.

Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1930, Fukasaku is the director of legendary yakuza series, Battles without Honor and Humanity. This film placed Fukasaku in the pantheon of Japanese masters. His 60th film Battle Royale is well-known as key influence by Quentin Tarantino and John Woo. He passed aways in 2003.
