Set in the near future where computers and robotics are highly advanced, the most distinctive characteristic of this film is that it focuses more on human ‘emotion’ than technology. It utilizes science fiction cliches from the TV series , Spielberg’s , and the Wachowski brothers’ . But the foundation of is somewhat subtle Asian-style flow of human relations seen in Wayne Wang’s . The ‘robot’, symbolizing the development of science which is now at a level where it regulates the daily lives of humans, is understood within those relations and is humanized by obtaining flesh and blood. A sophisticated and well thought out script expresses the director’s sense of balance from having read piles of sci-fi novels. The director does not use a decent special effect, but leaves the audience with an unusual aftertaste that is hard to find in Hollywood style blockbusters.(Kim Sang-hoon)
