Synopsis
Lin is a seventeen-year-old high school student whose biggest concern is his all-too-large penis. He has been in and out of porn shops since ten to compare how different his penis is from that of other people. It is during one of his frequent visits to porn shop that he meets the porn shop owner Cheng, who tells him that the most important thing in life is true love and that Lin’s life is without purpose because he is ignorant of this truth. After Cheng got killed by an absurd accident, Lin begins to ponder over what Cheng has told him. Although the story of centers on Lin, it presents a complex narrative with a complicated web of characters: Tarin, a troubled kid who goes to the same school with Lin and who is in love with him; cheng? friend Wang who is a housewife with a nude model career; neighborhood thugs and the police who are after them; the Japanese television team looking for juvenile delinquents in Taiwan; and Ken who was once a yakuza. The film intricately weaves all these characters around Lin, moving the story forward in the manner of comedy. Just like the characters, the form of the film is diverse, using flashbacks for individual characters and inserting interviews with the characters. Temporality takes on a complex form as it follows the temporal perspective of the characters. in the mode of Tarantino. Nevertheless, Lin remains the center of the complex comic web. Following Cheng’s advice, Lin goes to meet Wang, and there he confronts his demons. The circumstances may seem crude like a third-rate porn magazine, but they represent the process of maturation that heals Lin’s psychological trauma. At the end of the process, Lin meets Tarin and finally finds his life’s purpose. The same revelation is experienced by Wang’s husband, a policeman, while chasing neighborhood thugs. (Lim Ji-soo)
