Synopsis
Some questions are sure to arise in the mind not only of Tromaniacs but also of almost every viewer who saw more than one film from “Troma”. What the hell were the staff thinking when they stepped on board with the Kaufman gang? What were they thinking when they first set foot in this grotesque gruesome film factory? How do they put on those disgusting special make-ups that never fail to revolt us instantly? How can they film the stunts or the action sequences that happen at least once in their movies, despite their legendary low budgets? If you are one of the viewers that have any of the questions in your mind, then don’t miss this movie, which is a documentary on the filmmaking of Citizen Toxie: The Avenger ¥³! This film is not so much a comprehensive guide on the past and the present of Troma, but a report documenting nooks and corners of the location sets and various aspects of the staffs. It’s not the case, however, that the film fills the whole running time of almost two hours with boring tidbits. For instance, staff gather at coffee breaks and complain about Kaufman’s style of directing! The signature Troma style, which never fail to distract and confuse the viewers is presented honestly. The gunfights are well-crafted and filmed with care but just can’t help being rather crude, which leaves the viewers quite amused. Since it’s Troma, whose specialty is exposure and sex, there are many hilarious happenings, including ingenious improvisations - underlined by the subtitles. (To avoid changing the actors in the middle of the shooting, they have to shoot the sex scenes first.) Above all, the film gives us an insight into “Kaufman the serious director”, instead of the more well-known propagandist, braggart, and mindlessly, amateurish showman. The film gives us Kaufman cautiously studying the scenario with his assistants and managing the large crew masterfully. These scenes prove that the countless eccentricities of Troma are, in truth, far from impulsive, sensational gigs. (KIM Ji-hoon)
