Synopsis

Degraded lives. Degraded city. Alejandro is a car service driver who transports passengers in his own car. This is a commonplace part-time job for many middle class men who lost jobs or businesses due to economic collapse. He is a good man by all means, but his life, not to mention that of his miserable girlfriend Cecilia, is simply one long, meaningless, indescribable spell of deep depression. One day, he comes across a fast-talking self-made man and his wife. They start to make him offers - rosy, dreamy-sounding offers that will put an end to Alejandro and Cecilia's slimy, stifling depression. They begin to lose control of their lives and spiral down a perilous path. Pills, drugs, alcohol, Yoga and Spa, ear-drumming rock music and home audio systems, and the big business blueprint of selling “the magic gloves” that, if successful, promises an overnight wonder and an awakening as affluent. All the outlets for desires that promise joy and peace of mind, and mostly, a purpose for the meaning of life will be supplied. Will any of them, however, prove as good as their word and lead them to ultimate salvation? In the 21st century of globalization and post-capitalism, it’s everyone’s dream to make it big. Under the dark shadows of that dream, this petty, miserable, modern version of Doctor Faustus unfolds. Fallen Argentina is less than America. Fallen middle class gentleman Alejandro is less than a gentleman. Fallen car service driver is less than a taxi driver. Renault 21 is less than a limo. With his face hidden under a hideous wrestling mask, Luis is a porn actor less than a real actor. Nowhere can we see the larger-than-life human ambition reaching for the place of God. Alejandro makes endless trips to the airport, but it is hardly an escape from this pathetic stage of a sad comedy. The profound sense of loss in a third-world country, alienated and isolated by the illusion of global development, is here in the name of a ‘comedy’. (KIM Sun-hyung)
